Lightning strikes can lead to roof damage, electrical short circuits, and even fires. You definitely wouldn’t want to experience something like that, would you? Therefore, there are several precautions you can take to anticipate lightning strikes. Let’s explore the tips below, as quoted from Family Handy.
Tips to Anticipate Lightning Strikes on Your House
Here’s how to protect your house and its contents from lightning strikes:
Install a Lightning Rod
A lightning rod is a crucial device that must be installed in homes, especially for taller buildings. This simple device consists of a metal rod mounted at the roof's peak and connected to another metal rod buried underground. This setup safely channels the electrical current to the ground. Additionally, you can install internal lightning arrestors on electrical panels or electronic devices.
Use Surge Protectors
Lightning carries a large electrical charge, which can cause power surges in your home if struck. Extreme surges may result in power outages or short circuits. In severe cases, these short circuits could lead to explosions and fires. The solution is to install surge protectors. These devices detect, block, and divert excess voltage in your home. They are widely available online and easy to use.
Unplug Electronic Devices
During storms with lightning, it’s best to turn off and unplug electronic devices such as televisions, computers, phone chargers, and portable equipment. However, for devices that cannot be easily turned off, such as washing machines, dryers, stoves, or refrigerators, they are generally safe as long as they’re not in use during the storm.
